Multifocal intraocular lenses are recommended for people over 40–45 years of age who have farsightedness, higher myopia and minimal astigmatism (irregularly curved cornea).
This surgery achieves good vision at all distances, without or with minimal use of glasses and/or contact lenses. They can be implanted in people who have cataract (gray cataract), but also in people who do not have cataract, but are in presbyopic age and wear glasses for both near and distance vision.
Monofocal lenses refract light rays into a single focus, so after surgery the patient has good distance vision, while glasses are needed for reading and near work.
The new generation of intraocular lenses, which refract light rays into multiple foci and provide the patient with good distance and near vision without or with minimal use of glasses (when reading very small print or for extremely precise near work in low-light conditions), are called multifocal lenses.
Extraction of the natural clear lens (CLE – clear lens extraction)
Implantation of multifocal intraocular lenses can also be performed in people who do not have cataract, but wish to remove their existing diopter (people over 40–45 years of age who are in the presbyopic period and wear glasses for both near and distance vision). This surgery is called extraction of the natural clear lens (CLE – clear lens extraction).
It is a possible option for those patients who are not suitable candidates for laser vision correction, and do not wish to wear glasses or contact lenses.
What does surgery with implantation of multifocal lenses look like?
Implantation of multifocal intraocular lenses is performed in both eyes (5–7 days apart), as this is the only way for their full potential to be expressed.
The surgery is painless and is performed under local, topical anesthesia. The lens is implanted into the eye through a minimal incision of 2.2 mm, without injections and sutures. This surgery is a form of one-day surgery, which means that the patient goes home after the procedure.

Recovery is quick and comfortable, so the patient can return to usual daily activities after 5–7 days, while heavy physical work and sports activities are not recommended in the first 3–4 weeks.
Trifocal intraocular lenses
The latest achievement of modern ophthalmic surgery, available on our market since mid-2016, are the so-called trifocal lenses.
Trifocal lenses have as many as three foci, so in addition to good distance vision (about 80 cm and more) and near vision (about 40 cm), they provide patients with good intermediate vision (about 60 cm), which is especially important for people who spend a lot of time at the computer, as well as for drivers.
The distribution of light is always identical for all three distances, regardless of lighting conditions and pupil size, which makes this lens unique in the world. Also, the rate of secondary cataract is very low.
With these lenses, patients can read, drive, work on a computer, watch TV, look at a watch or mobile phone, shave or apply makeup, play sports, swim, dive and perform all other everyday activities, of course without or with minimal use of glasses.
The Center for Laser Eye Surgery “Perfect Vision”, as an institution without visiting foreign doctors, holds a leading position in Serbia with the highest number of implanted trifocal lenses.*
